  • Canada - Anyone with a criminal record, including a drink-driving conviction, may be excluded from Canada. A waiver of exclusion may be issued.

    If you were convicted of or committed a criminal offence outside Canada, you may overcome the inadmissibility of entering Canada by applying for rehabilitation. Alternatively, you may be deemed rehabilitated if a certain period of time has passed since the offence.

    If you were charged with an offence but no conviction was recorded, you may enter Canada as a visitor but you should carry with you the documents showing that no conviction was recorded.

  • Japan - They particularly look out for drug convictions, and indictable offences, or where the person has spent a year in jail.

    On the incoming passenger card, you will be asked to fill in information regarding whether or not you have received a conviction. If you fill in yes, you will likely be taken aside upon arrival at the airport by the Immigration officers.

    However, there are no hard and fast rules, and whether or not you are granted entry is determined on a case-by-case basis. The decision is made at the Immigration officers at the airport in Japan. Therefore, it is best to call your local Consulate to ask them for the telephone number of the Immigration officer of the relevant airport you will be arriving at, and to call the immigration officer.
